On 30 January we held a Hack Day for adult social care staff. The focus was on learning and development – specifically to create something new and exciting that will drive us forwards to becoming “the best adult social care service in the UK, where people are inspired to work.”
In learning and development, we often get told we could do better and we want to. We want colleagues from all departments in Adult Social Care to come to Bexley, grow their career here and ultimately stay in Bexley. Our more traditional L&D strategy does some of the work to get us to this aspiration, but we know we don’t have all the answers. We wanted to work with staff to find ways to build on our successes and make changes or do something new.
As well as teams from across Adult Social Care, we were joined by guests from MTR Crossrail, Skills for Care, Sweet Tree Home Care Services and Red Quadrant to share their expertise and spark some inspiration for how to do things differently.
The day was energetically facilitated by colleagues from Basis and show-cased a new way of making change happen. There was a palpable buzz in the Council Chamber, growing in an excitable crescendo as the session progressed.
After doing some research and hearing some insights from guest speakers, the group broke into teams to start developing their pitches. Conversations continued beyond lunch and by 3pm we had 7 pitches ready for our (friendly) Dragons to hear in their den.
The proposals ranged from new service models that would bring social work staff closer to the residents they served, to skills exchange and job swap opportunities, to creating an adult social care app to keep colleagues in the loop.
After some difficult deliberations the judges awarded prizes but the real work starts today as we begin to turn these ideas into reality…
